What is Canny edge detection?

Canny edge detection is an algorithm that finds the boundaries between different regions in an image. It produces a clean black-and-white image showing only the edges.
It works by first smoothing the image with a Gaussian blur, then finding areas of rapid intensity change, and finally filtering out weak edges using the threshold values.

How do the threshold settings work?

The lower threshold sets the minimum edge strength — anything below this is discarded as noise. The upper threshold sets the guaranteed edge strength — anything above this is always kept as an edge.
Edges between the two thresholds are kept only if they connect to a strong edge. A wider gap between lower and upper creates more connected edges.
